Games come in all shapes and sizes. On one side are cute kids games such as Skylanders, to the ultra violent Gears of War, and God of War games. But everyone has the own opinion on which types of games are best. Not that any one person is correct in their opinions, all genres of gaming have pro’s and con’s to them.
My personal favorites boil down to, first person shooters (FPS), role playing games (RPG), And action-adventures.
First off the most popular genre in gaming the first person shooter. I personally like playing FPS games such as Call of Duty, for the fast paced action, and immediate reward of winning, and killing the opposing player.
Being in that first person view, the action is literally in your face. It is one of the best immersive styles that is used in all of gaming. Putting you into the front lines of the action and story, and not letting up one bit.
On the truly opposing side of the spectrum, role playing games. The best part of RPG’s are the slow pay off, grinding dozens of hours to get powerful enough to defeat a horrifyingly formidable foe.
I enjoy all types of RPG’s, from the traditional japanese variety like Dragon Quest and Pokemon, to western like The Elder Scrolls Skyrim. And somewhere in between, Dark Souls. Dark Souls in particular really defines for me, my love for RPG’s. It is unforgiving in its brutality, but it never seems cheap, whenever I die I always feel that it was my doing, and I just need to practice more. This feeling of honing my skills to master the game, is a slow and sometimes tedious grind, but the hours and hours of playtime pays off big when you can finally finish what so many other couldn’t.
Last but not least action-adventures. This broad category of games encompases many other genres boiled into one. I equate this category to the Assassin’s Creed series, and Dishonored, and other games that focus on the action of the game as a driving force.
I find these games almost good palate cleansers for all types of gaming. They have aspects of all genres, put into a mosh pit of gaming awesomeness. There is a good amount of instant action of besting your foes, and completing simple tasks, and so on. But there is also a great reward for all your work throughout the game as well. The extremes of both are based in the FPS and RPG genres, but this is a perfect middle ground. In general this a genre for all ages, and skill types to get into.
These are not the extent of my gaming portfolio, I do enjoy all types of games, from every genre and all platforms. But these are the types that I gravitate towards when I have nothing else to play, and I just pick up and go.
